I had a lot of requests asking me to put up a tutorial on how to color manga caps so here it is~ I apologize if it’s not clear enough, I’m really bad at explaining.
What you need:
- Photoshop (I use CS5)
- Basic skills of Photoshop
Note: I’ll be skipping the process of cleaning a manga cap and go straight to coloring. I’ll make a tutorial on how to clean a manga cap on photoshop one day. But here’s a great tutorial by T-o-k-i-d-o-k-i on how to edit mangacaps :)
Step 1: Have a manga cap clean and ready to color. I’ll be using this mangacap of my husband Hatake Kakashi and Pakkun ~
Step 2: Open the manga cap on Photoshop.
Step 3: (1) Click Layer > Duplicate Layer and then open a blank layer under the Background copy by clicking Layer > New > Layer. (2) Fill the blank layer with light gray. (I used #e8e8e8). (3) Set the image Background copy from Normal to Multiply.
Step 4: (1) We’ll first start with his face. Take the pen tool and outline it around the face. (2) Pick a color that matches his skin color (I used #ffecd8). (3) Right Click > Fill Path > Click Ok. (4) Set the layer to Multiply. (5) Take the pen tool and outline it on his eyes, mouth, etc to get rid of the excess color. (5) Right Click > Make Selection > Click Ok > Edit > Cut.
Step 5: Now onto his hair. (1) Do the same step you did in Step 4. Create a New Layer and then outline his hair with the pen tool.
Step 6: Also do the same with his vest, Kohona Headband, and also Pakkun!
Step 7: Onto the shadowing! (1) Create a New Layer. (2) Take the Brush Tool with the color black (I used Size 100 px). (3) Slightly go over it around his face and also Pakkun’s. (4) Set it from Normal to Soft Light. You can also set the Opacity lower if it’s too dark.
Step 8: (1) Click on one of the layers, I’ll be starting with the headband. (2) Double Click on it and Layer Style should pop up. Click on Gradient Overlay and set it from Normal to Soft Light.
Step 9: Now do the rest to the other layers such as the vest and hair.
Step 10: Last step! Now to enhance the colored cap. You can download colored PSD’s from YeahPS and experiment with the manga cap :)
